1. What are Foundation Brakes?

2. Types of Foundation Brakes:

Drum Brakes:

S-cam Brakes: The most common type for commercial vehicles, using a rotating drum and brake shoes to create friction. 

Wedge Brakes: A type of drum brake with no exposed brake linkage. 

Disc Brakes:

Use calipers and rotors. The brake chamber pushrod stroke presses the brake pads against the rotor. 

3. How Foundation Brakes Work:

When the driver applies the service brakes, air pressure is sent to the air brake chambers. 

The air pressure in the chambers moves a pushrod, which then actuates the foundation brakes. 

For S-cam brakes, this movement rotates a camshaft, which forces brake shoes against the drum. 

For disc brakes, the pushrod movement causes the caliper to clamp the brake pads against the rotor.
